Compassion Christian Center The Academic Center of Excellence (ACE) at Compassion Christian Center Church is located in Central California in the City of Bakersfield, about two hours north of Los Angeles. Still known for its agricultural richness, Bakersfield has a population of about 323,213, of which 32.5% are of Hispanic or Latino origin and 10.4% are Black or African American. The community is predominantly low to middle income and has a history of gang activity and violence. The ACE at Compassion Christian Center began in the summer of 2004. This site is currently focusing on a project to raise $200,000 in six months to pay for a computer lab, which is utilized for ACE and school activities. Participants at the Bakersfield ACE come from local schools including: The following local High Schools: Bakersfield, East, South, West, Highland, and Foothill. International The Academic Center of Excellence (ACE) at Glory Christian Fellowship International (GCFI) is located in the City of Carson near the 110 Freeway and the Carson Towne Center. Carson has 92,000 people of which 27.4% are African American, 24.0% are Asian American, and 20.2% are Filipino American. The ACE at GCFI was established in September 2003. This year, the ACE at GCFI has served 150 students. Including students from past years, its programs have served 250 students. In August 2004, it was one of the first sites to pilot the ALEKS online math tutorial program to a group of 50 students who came twice a week for about eight weeks. Students come from schools in Carson and the surrounding areas, including but not limited to Banning High, Cabrillo High, Carson Senior High School, California Academy of Mathematics & Science, Carson Christian School, The Chadwick School, Compton Centennial High, City Honors High, Compton High, Curtiss Middle School, Dominguez High, Downtown Business Magnet, Downey High, Fleming Middle, Gardena High, Gardena Valley, Gahr High, Harbor Teacher Prep Academy, Hawthorne High, King Drew Medical Magnet, Long Beach Jordan High, Long Beach Polytechnic High, Manhattan Beach Middle, Narbonne High, Optimal Christian School, Saint Bernard High, San Pedro High, Verbum Dei High, Westchester High, and West Torrance High. The area is economically depressed: 54% live in poverty and among families with children, 24.6% are female-headed households. Here, violence is high and educational attainment is low. Of adults 25 years of age and above, 52% have not completed eighth grade and another 22% do not have a high school diploma. Among the strategies that the Center plans to employ in 2005 include a major sports program centered on indoor soccer and basketball. The Center has also partnered with Daniel Armstrong, founder of the Find A Tree program, to motivate students to learn how education connects to their personal dreams. The Center is also planning to expand its artistic development activities, including an animation drawing seminar led by Stacia Martin of Walt Disney Studios, a songwriting seminar by two-time Academy Award winning Richard Sherman, “The Fiesta” drawing contest, and a play “Aladdin’s Arabian Adventures.” Students come from schools including Breed Street Elementary School, Second Street Elementary School, St. Mary’s Elementary and Middle School, Hollenbeck Middle School, and Roosevelt High School. The area surrounding Golden West Christian Church includes Echo Park and has a population of about 25,000, of which 52% are Hispanic or Latino and 22% are Asian. The ACE at Golden West Christian Church has been in existence since February 2003. It serves students through programs such as Golden West Kids After School, which runs from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. This site also provides academic advising to students at John Marshall High School, Belmont High School, and Downtown Business Magnet on Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students come from schools in East Los Angeles and the surrounding neighborhoods, including but not limited to John Marshall High School, Belmont High School, and Golden West Christian School, which are a part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Church The Academic Center of Excellence (ACE) at Praises of Zion Baptist Church is located in Los Angeles at the corner of 83rd and San Pedro Street near Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles and the Maxine Waters Center. The community surrounding the ACE at Praises of Zion is predominantly Hispanic or Latino, Afro-American, Asian, and Cambodian. Many of the students come from low-income households headed by single mothers, grandparents, or foster parents. Many of the students have also suffered from gang violence in the area. The ACE at Praises of Zion served approximately 60 students in 2004 with various activities and programs. In January of 2005, the ACE at Praises of Zion will host a basketball tournament for the youth enrolled in their after school tutoring program. It also plans to collaborate with the Youth Opportunity of Watts to implement a greater range of activities for its students. The outreach partnerships are designed to establish strong venues of learning called Academic Centers of Excellence (ACE). The ACE sites are located at community-serving and faith-based organizations in low-income and educational disadvantaged communities in Northern and Southern California. First Baptist Church
Pittsburg, CA Reverend Henry L. Perkins The Academic Center of Excellence (ACE) at First Baptist Church is located in the city of Pittsburg, just outside of the bay area. Pittsburg has a population of 63,000 of which 32.2% are Hispanic, 31.2% white non Hispanic and 18.9% African Americans. The ACE Program at First Baptist began in 2003. ACE services over 200 students a year through its various programs. Students come from the following schools: Pittsburg High School, Riverside High School, Deer Valley High School, Antioch High School, Central Junior High, Hillview Junior High, Black Diamond Middle School, Park Junior High School, Christian Center School, and Cornerstone Christian School. The ACE at Ascension Lutheran Church partners with students from UCLA to provide tutors for local students. It has also successfully recruited students from the community to participate in the Los Angeles Mentoring Program, a summer internship program to introduce underprivileged students to the medical field. It is currently working on building a computer lab. Any computer, printer, monitor, or cash donations to help in this outreach effort are greatly appreciated. San Jacinto, CA Pastor Vincent Sims House of Praise Academy (HOPA) at House of Praise Ministries is located in the City of San Jacinto, at 167 De Anza Drive. According to the 2006 City Demographic report, San Jacinto has a population of 34,345 of which 68% is Caucasian, 2% is Asian, 3% is African American, and 27% is of Other Ethnicity. 40% of the population has no College education, 54% of households have income below $75,000 per year, and 33% of the population is below 18 years old. HOPA was established in 2000. It provides full day tutoring for students from K-12th grades, and has a preschool center for children ages 2 to 5. The students receive tutoring in core academic courses as well as participate in college prep workshops, sports programs, performing arts courses, fieldtrips, and vocational training programs. In the summer of 2008 HOPA will be expanding to offer before and after school programs for K-8th graders. Programs
