| A message from the Assistant
Vice President
Thank you for visiting the ACADEMIC CENTERS OF
EXCELLENCE web site. The following program overview provides
you with information about our program.
The California State University, Bakersfield Community
and Faith-based Partnership Initiative is a comprehensive community-based,
program-specific Initiative that prepares students academically
for competitive admissibility to higher educational institutions
(e.g., California State University, Bakersfield).
The Initiative evolved out of a need to increase the
number of underserved, low-income youth who are eligible for admittance
to college. The Initiative strategically links higher education
institutions at the macro-structural level with local K-12 schools,
community organizations and families on the micro-structural level
in an effort to deliver college preparatory services that improve
a student’s academic success.
The primary foci of the Initiative are to:
• partner higher education institutions and community-serving
and faith-based organizations to promote a college-going culture
at community-serving and faith-based organizations in low-income
and educationally disadvantaged communities
• increase the academic competitiveness of students from low-income
and educationally disadvantaged communities
• increase the number of students from low-income and educationally
disadvantaged communities who enroll in two- and four-year institutions
of higher education.
Strong venues of learning called ACADEMIC CENTERS
OF EXCELLENCE have been established at partnering community
and faith-based sites in Northern and Southern California. Centered
primarily in high poverty communities and low-performing urban school
districts, these Centers are designed to build and strengthen relations
and promote a college-going culture and academic competitiveness
among students by making educational resources more accessible to
the students in these communities.
Sites provide students with extended learning opportunities
in:
• language arts and mathematics
• tutoring, mentoring and homework assistance
• increased parental and community involvement in the educational
process
• comprehensive advisement on academic planning for college
and university admissions for both parents and students
• the opportunity to use computers, online and digital resources
to facilitate student development
More than 4,500 students are currently
being served through the various program activities and events developed
and sponsored by the ACADEMIC CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE in community-based
sites.
Please feel free to contact any
of our site directors and me personally if you would like more
information about the ACADEMIC CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE and the impact
these centers are making in the lives of the children in their communities.
